Norwich ― Police are searching for a man who they say robbed two banks on Salem Turnpike within 18 minutes on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said at 3:03 p.m. they received a call from an alarm company that there had been a hold-up alarm at Liberty Bank located at 77 Salem Turnpike. Police responded and learned that a man had entered the bank, demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount of cash. That money was later found in the bank parking lot.

At 3:21 p.m. while officers were still at Liberty Bank, police received a 911 call from Core Plus Bank at 202 Salem Turnpike reporting a man wearing clothing identical to the Liberty Bank suspect had just robbed that bank and fled with $500.

Several officers left Liberty Bank for Core Plus Bank where employees told them the suspect had fled into the woods across from the bank. A K-9 team then tried to track the man. Police said they believe the suspect changed his clothes after the Core Plus robbery.

Police said the suspect is thought to be a white male, possibly Hispanic. He did not display or threaten anyone with a weapon. Police said that although the suspect is not considered to be a threat to the public, if anyone sees the man they should not approach him and notify police. Police thanked numerous citizens for providing them with assistance and information.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to contact the Detective Division at (860) 886-5561 EXT #7, by email Detective Seidel at mseidel@cityofnorwich.org or by calling the Department’s Anonymous Tip Line at (860) 886-5561 EXT #4. All information can be kept confidential

Tuesday’s robberies mark the third and fourth bank robberies in the city within a week.

On Friday, a man robbed the Chelsea Groton Bank at 444 W. Main St. A few days earlier, police responded to the Dime Bank at 630 Main St. for a reported robbery.

In both cases, the suspect, described as a light-skinned tan male, made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after demanding money. Police have not reported any arrests in those cases.
