Norwich police charge man with trying to steal car, assaulting owner

Norwich ― Police said a man was arrested after he assaulted a man and tried to steal his car early Monday.

Police said in an arrest report that they responded to the area of 275 Washington St. to investigate a 911 hangup. The victim there said a man assaulted him and tried to steal his car.

Police said Efrain Andujar, 35, admitted to the allegations. Police determined he had struck the victim in the head with a blunt object, tried to steal his car, stole his cellphone and then smashed it.

Police said Andujar was arrested at 2:36 a.m. and taken to the police department, where he became combative and kicked an officer in the groin. Police said he refused to comply with the booking process.

Andujar, of 40 Hamilton Ave., No. 1, was charged with second-degree assault, assault of a public safety/emergency medical personnel, failure to submit to fingerprints, second-degree breach of peace, first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief, and criminal attempt of third-degree larceny.

His bond was set at $250,000 and he is due in court on Sept. 14, according to police.
