New London police officer to receive meritorious service award

New London ― Police Lt. Cornelius Rodgers was scheduled to be honored Wednesday night with a Meritorious Service Award for his lifesaving actions during a fatal April 21 crash on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Rodgers was slated to receive the award during a Celebrating Law Enforcement banquet of the Police Commissioners Association of Connecticut in Stratford.

Rodgers was off duty when he stopped to help two victims of a car that had been struck by a fuel tank truck on Interstate 95. Burning fuel consumed the car just moments after Rodgers helped pull the driver to safety.
