Woman seriously injured after falling off 30-foot cliff in Mystic

Mystic ― A 73-year-old New London woman suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday afternoon after police said she fell down a 30-foot cliff on Masons Island.

Deputy Chief Todd Olson said the woman had gone outside to rake leaves at the home of a 90-year-old woman she was caring for at 14 Quarry Path. The older woman called police at 1 p.m. saying he could not locate her caretaker.

Olson said Officer Joe McDermott searched the yard and located the woman at the bottom of the cliff. The Quiambaug Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics responded. The woman was taken to the nearby Naik Family Branch of the Ocean Community YMCA where she was flown by a medical helicopter from Massachusetts to Rhode Island Hospital. Police did not have an update on her condition late Sunday afternoon.

Olson said the incident is not considered suspicious.
