Kitchen fire at Branford Manor apartment displaces family

Groton — A kitchen fire at a Branford Manor apartment Monday evening displaced a family of four.

City of Groton Fire Capt. Chester Kaniecki said the family got out of the apartment at 177 Mather Ave. safely, and no one was injured.

Kaniecki said the family ― a mother and three children ― will go to stay with relatives.

He said the fire, which was extinguished fairly quickly, caused significant damage in the kitchen, and the apartment is uninhabitable.

Kaniecki said the call for the fire was dispatched at 7:17 p.m. Monday. Fire departments from the City of Groton, Poquonnock Bridge, Electric Boat, and the Naval Submarine Base responded. Noank Fire Department covered the City of Groton Fire Department, while the city department responded to the fire. The Mystic Fire Department responded, but the need for the department was canceled upon arrival.

Groton Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics also responded.

Kaniecki said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal.
