Fire destroys homeless camp in Norwich

Norwich ― Fire swept through a homeless encampment off Hamilton Avenue on Thursday, destroying makeshift homes and personal belongings.

No one was injured in the fire and none of the occupants were at the camp when firefighters arrived at 5:11 p.m., Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Montoya said. The camp is on the eastern bank of the Shetucket River not far from a football field.

Montoya said it is unclear how many people were staying at the camp but there was a raised platform and a makeshift fire pit in an area about 20 feet by 15 feet wide. In addition to the burned debris, the fire spread to some of the surrounding underbrush.

The cause of the fire remain under investigation.
