Norwich police warn of new phone scams

Norwich ― Police are warning residents of two new phone scams in which the department’s routine phone number is being spoofed.

The first scam appears to target dentists’ offices with a message asking for payment of fines for a missed subpoena. The scammer warns the dentist if they do not pay the fine immediately over the phone they will be subject to arrest.

The Norwich Police Department does not issue subpoenas, does not issue fines associated with subpoenas and will never threaten individuals with arrest for unpaid fines, police said.

The second scam appears to be an automated message advising of a “public service announcement,” but no other information is relayed. As a result of the calls, police said numerous residents and businesses have called the Norwich Communications Center at the police department stating they were returning phone messages left by the police.

The only automated message the public will receive from the Norwich Police Department will be through the Everbridge system, which is a critical event management platform that informs of public safety or natural disaster events.

The Norwich Police Department said it would never ask for personal information, request payment for services or solicit monetary donations over the phone.
