New London ― At least seven people were displaced Monday by a two-alarm fire that damaged a multifamily home at 18 Gorton St.

At 10:10 a.m., firefighters arrived at the two-story home to find smoke coming from attic windows and eaves of the roof. Firefighters entered the home with hoses and accessed the roof from ladders.

At one point while fighting the blaze, firefighters could be seen leading one of the residents out the front door. The man, who asked not to be identified, said he awoke to the sound of footsteps and shattering glass above him.

The fire appeared to be under control about a half-hour after firefighters arrived and contained it to the attic.

New London Fire Chief Tom Curcio said the extent of the damage to the home, which had two apartments, is not yet known. One firefighter sustained a knee injury and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants with emergency needs.

Mutual aid came from the Waterford, Poquonnock Bridge, Electric Boat and Submarine Base fire departments, along with Groton Ambulance.
