New London man charged with shooting at home, vehicle

New London ― Police on Tuesday arrested a 32-year-old New London man in connection with a Feb. 18 shooting that left bullet holes in a vehicle and a home on Rogers Street.

Rakim Thornton of 36 Georgiana St. is charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, criminal possession of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment.

At 10:45 p.m. on Feb. 18, police received reports of gunfire in the area of Rogers Street and Jefferson Avenue. Police did not find any gunshot victims, but did locate multiple shell casings. Detectives developed Thornton as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

He was taken into custody Monday evening while he was entering a business on Mountain Avenue, taking him into custody without incident, police said.

Held on a $750,000 bond, Thornton was due to appear Tuesday in New London Superior Court. Thornton has several previous criminal convictions, including a 2016 conviction for illegal drug possession.
