Two accidental shootings in one day, Norwich police say

State and local police responded Tuesday to two accidental shootings, one in Norwich and another on a state highway.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, and in both cases the victims shot their own hands, police said.

The first shooting was reported to Norwich police at 10:43 a.m. when a man showed up at Backus Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the hand. Police said an investigation revealed the shooting had taken place on a state highway. They notified state police, who were not immediately available to provide further details, such as where the shooting occurred.

The second shooting was reported to Norwich police at 7:30 p.m. and had taken place at a residence on Briar Lane. Police said a man was cleaning the barrel of a .22 caliber gun when it discharged and struck his hand. Police said there did not appear to be anything criminal about the incident.
