    Woman charged with DUI after car crashes into building in Norwich

    The police and fire department responded at 6:30 p.m. on March 31, 2024, for reports of a car into a building at 303 W. Main St., near the intersection of Asylum Street. The car had traveled through and destroyed a roadside bus stop shelter outside Willow Tree Plaza. (Greg Smith)

    Norwich ― Police said a woman was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Sunday when her car crashed through a bus stop shelter and hit the side of a business on West Main Street.

    The police and fire department responded at 6:30 p.m. for reports of a car into a building at 303 W. Main St., at the intersection of Asylum Street. The car had traveled through and destroyed a roadside bus stop shelter outside Willow Tree Plaza, glanced off a utility pole and continued about 1,000 feet down West Main Street where it hit the building housing Sign Professionals at 303 W. Main St.

    Norwich Fire Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin, in a statement, said the female driver was not seriously injured and refused medical attention.

    Jennifer Young, 41, of 1 Willey Place in Norwich was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving and possession of a controlled substance.

    The building sustained structural and electrical damage and is expected to remain closed until the damage is inspected and deemed safe by the Norwich building official. The crash destroyed the roof, benches and electrical service to the bus stop shelter, leaving shattered glass in the parking lot of the adjacent shopping center.
