Groton Town Police Taser New York man who refused to drop knife outside hotel

Groton ― Town police Tasered a New York man Sunday after he refused to drop his knife after earlier holding it to a man’s throat at the Baymont Inn and threatening to kill him and his family.

Police said in a news release that the man they Tasered was not injured, and none of the people he threatened were injured.

Police said Jonathan Jean-Pierre had placed an emergency call at 7:14 a.m. Sunday asking police to respond to the hotel at 360 Route 12 to help him after hotel staff refused to allow him into a room.

While police were on their way, hotel patrons called 911 to report that Jean-Pierre had displayed a knife and threatened to “kill everyone,” according to police.

Police said they found Jean-Pierre in front of the hotel with a knife in his hand. They told him to drop the knife, but he refused and continued to walk toward Route 12.

Police said after Jean-Pierre continued to refuse, an officer deployed his Taser, “striking and immediately incapacitating” him. Police said they took a folding multi-tool/knife from him. Jean-Pierre was evaluated and treated by Groton Ambulance.

Police said witnesses told them that Jean-Pierre became angry about not being able to get into a room that hotel staff had not yet prepared. He began yelling profanities at hotel staff.

Police said one of the parents associated with a youth marching band, which was in the area for a competition and eating breakfast, “asked him to quiet down since there were so many children in the area.”

According to police, Jean-Pierre pulled out what appeared to be a butterfly-type knife “and held it to the victim’s throat, making several disturbing comments and indicating his intent to murder the victim, his wife and children.”

Hotel staff intervened and got Jean-Pierre outside before police arrived, “where he continued to display the knife and yell disturbing statements until police arrived.”

Jean-Pierre, 30, of Rosedale, N.Y., was charged with violation of conditions of release, carrying a dangerous weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, three counts of second-degree threatening, and three counts of second-degree breach of peace.

He was held on a $275,000 bond and arraigned in New London Superior Court on Monday.

Police said they seized the knife/multi-tool as evidence. They are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to call the department at (860) 441-6712.
