Work crews hit gas line in New London

New London ― A ruptured natural gas line forced the closure of a portion of Broad Street on Monday, where there is ongoing gas line work.

The New London Fire Department responded to Broad Street, between Brainard and Hempstead streets, at about 10 a.m. for reports of leaking gas in the area where the road is being excavated.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Waters said crews with Michels Utility Services hit and ruptured an unmarked residential gas line while digging up the main gas line. A main gas line is being replaced as part of the project there.

The fire department was working with Eversource to shut the gas supply to the damaged line. Homes and businesses in the area were also metered to ensure there was not a gas buildup.

No injuries were reported and the fire department cleared the scene prior to noon. A portion of Broad Street remained closed because of the road work.
