Groton Town police officers credited with rescuing boaters in distress
Groton – Groton Town Police Chief Louis L.J. Fusaro Jr. is crediting two of his officers with helping to save boaters in distress over the weekend in Fishers Island Sound.
At 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Groton Town Police officers Shawn Paradis and Matthew Monaghan were on routine marine patrol on the Mystic River when they responded to a distress call from a sailboat east of Middle Clump, in the area of Fishers Island Sound in New York, police said in a statement.
Police found a 30-foot Catalina Sloop sailboat had lost rigging supporting its spinnaker sail and was in danger of striking rocks. Police said the two officers jumped on board the sailboat to help a Guilford couple to secure the boat’s sail. No injuries were reported and the couple continued on to Fishers Island.
Fusaro, in a statement, credited his officers with “quick thinking and teamwork,” that prevented a potential tragedy.
