Man dead of suspected overdose at Crystal Avenue apartments

New London — Police said the death of a man discovered Monday in the stairwell of a Crystal Avenue apartment complex is being investigated as a possible drug overdose.

Emergency services responded to a 911 call at 9:50 a.m. Monday for a male overdose victim, police said. The unresponsive man was found in a sixth-floor stairwell at the Thames River Apartments, 48 Crystal Ave.

New London Fire Department personnel administered the opiate-reversal drug naloxone, or Narcan, in an attempt to resuscitate the man. The man was subsequently transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Evidence was seized by police while on scene and the investigation into the cause of death is ongoing. Police said they are withholding the man’s identity pending confirmation.

The death comes even as residents at the long-troubled apartment complex are moving out of the federally subsidized high rises. The New London Housing Authority applied for and received a disposition order from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The housing authority is now assisting residents with a move into private housing.
