Hartford man pleads guilty in 2017 Norwich overdose death

A Hartford man pleaded guilty Thursday to drug charges in the overdose death of a 20-year-old woman in Norwich in September of last year.

Felix "Pablo" Lopez, 23, waived his right to be indicted and entered the plea before Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven to one count of possession with intent to distribute/distribution of heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. The charges were brought in connection with an ongoing initiative to target dealers who distribute opioids that have caused death or injury to users.

Norwich police on Sept. 13, 2017, responded to the report of an untimely death in a residence that city, according to court documents. Officers were told the dead woman had been addicted to heroin, and at the scene they seized drug evidence and the woman's cellphone. She had died of acute fentanyl and heroin intoxication, the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined.

Police said their investigation revealed that Lopez had supplied the heroin and fentanyl that the woman consumed before she died. He was arrested on a federal charge on Nov. 13, 2017, when he was found to be in possession of crack cocaine.

He faces a maximum term of 20 years' imprisonment.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and Norwich, Hartford and Manchester police investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Pierpont Jr.
