Groton Town police make arrest in case that prompted lockdown

Groton — Town police have arrested a man who they say threatened someone with a BB gun and fled the scene Friday morning, prompting a lockdown of schools and summer programs near Midway Oval.

Police charged Leroy Hackett, 56, with first-degree threatening, interfering with an officer and disorderly conduct.

Police learned of the incident near Midway Oval and Ivy Court at 6:05 a.m. Town officers and K-9 units, a Waterford K-9 unit, state Environmental Conservation Police and Amtrak police began searching the area.

Police launched lockdowns at the Ella T. Grasso Technical High School, Claude Chester Elementary School and the TVCCA Childcare and Preschool Center “out of an abundance of caution.”

An Amtrak officer spotted Hackett on a Groton trail in the Poquonnock Bridge part of town and by 9:30 a.m. police had taken him into custody.

Held on a $50,000 bond, Hackett is due Monday in New London Superior Court.
