New London — A man in a pickup truck attempted to abduct a 9-year-old girl who was walking up the driveway to her family's residence on State Pier Road on Friday afternoon, city police said.

According to the police report, the man told the girl about 1:17 p.m. on Friday that her mother had sent him to pick her up. The victim told police that the man's hands were touching his “private parts” when he opened the door of the truck and he tried to get her inside the vehicle.

Police are investigating the incident and described the unidentified suspect as a white man of medium build who is possibly between 30 and 40 years old. He has facial hair and was wearing eyeglasses, a dark-colored shirt and a blue Nike hat.

Police said the pickup truck is possibly an early 2000 Dodge Ram that is gray or silver. The vehicle has white wall tires with silver rims, side/step rails on both sides, circular decals on the upper right and upper left rear window and white paint on the inside of the rear tailgate.
