Police investigating alleged sexual assaults involving former NFA employee

Norwich — The Norwich Police Department is involved in an active investigation into alleged sexual assaults involving a former Norwich Free Academy employee and a student — or students — attending the school when the assaults occurred, police confirmed Saturday.

Lt. Christopher Conley said in a news release that police have been investigating since June 2018.

Pending further investigation, police are not releasing the name of the employee under investigation.

Conley said the Norwich Police Department's Detective Division "is actively investigating the facts surrounding the allegations as well as how the information was discovered and reported."

Asked about the time period of the alleged assaults and how many students were victims, Conley replied in an email that this information will be released but not at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.

NFA Head of School David Klein said in an email statement that the school has "terminated its relationship with the subject of the investigation. The individual is no longer affiliated with NFA in any capacity."

He added that NFA has fully cooperated with the police department and will continue to do so.

In response to questions by The Day regarding Klein's statement, NFA spokesman Geoff Serra said academy officials said in an email statement, "There will be no further comment from NFA about this ongoing police investigation."

Norwich Police Chief Patrick Daley said Saturday the department does not comment on open investigations. Police have been on campus as part of the investigation, but Daley said he could not comment further.
