Fire broke out Friday at Misquamicut Beach pavilion

Westerly — A fire broke out Friday afternoon at the pavilion at Misquamicut State Beach and caused extensive damage to the concession stand area, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

The cause of the fire at the pavilion of Rhode Island's largest state beach is "inconclusive" and under investigation by the Rhode Island Fire Marshal, said Michael Healey, spokesman for the Rhode Island DEM.

The Misquamicut, Dunn's Corners and Watch Hill fire departments responded to the fire that started between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. and was extinguished about 4:30 p.m., Healey said.

The fire was contained to the concession stand area but there was some smoke damage and charring that extended from there, he said. There were no injuries.

"The fact that it wasn't worse is a credit to all those fire districts in Westerly," Healey said.

The half-mile-long beach in 2016 saw about 340,000 visitors, of which about 77 percent were from out of state.
