New officer brings Waterford police force to capacity

Waterford — With Monday's addition of Officer Paul Stutzman, the Waterford Police Department has 49 officers and is at capacity, Chief Brett Mahoney said.

Mahoney said Stutzman, sworn in Monday at Town Hall, graduated from West Haven High School and has a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Southern Connecticut State University.

Stutzman spent three years with the West Haven Police Department before coming to Waterford. Before that, he was an officer with the state Department of Correction and won the Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dignity and Excellence award for his graduating class, Mahoney said.

Police will formally welcome Stutzman and recruit Zachary Caler during a ceremony at the department Thursday at 3 p.m.

Caler was sworn in July 3 and graduated from the Connecticut Police Academy in mid-December.

Mahoney said Caler graduated from Lyman Memorial High School in Lebanon and has attended the University of Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut State University. Caler expects to earn a degree in sociology this year.

Before joining the Waterford force, Caler, who has his private pilot’s license, was a dispatcher for the Plainfield and Willimantic police departments.
