Stonington police: Suspect stole, abandoned 4 cars in crime spree

Stonington — Police are investigating a crime spree in which they believe someone burglarized a Barnes Road home, then stole and either abandoned or crashed four vehicles across several towns early Tuesday.

Police said the call began when a Barnes Road resident said a person had been in their home and had stolen some items about 1:44 a.m.

Police said they saw a vehicle speeding out of the driveway when they arrived. Police said the driver, whose vehicle was stolen out of Amston, quickly crashed into a stone wall and left the scene.

Police believe the suspect then stole a vehicle from nearby Farmholme Road around 2:23 a.m. and drove it to Azalea Drive in Westerly, R.I.

Police said the suspect apparently ditched the Farmholme Road vehicle, stole another car from Azalea Drive, crashed it on Interstate 95 near Exit 86, went to the Super 8 Motel on state Route 12 and then stole yet another vehicle.

The final vehicle was later found in Hartford, police said.

Norwich police provided a K-9 team after the first crash. Groton Town police are investigating the Super 8 car theft, and state police are investigating the I-95 crash.

No injuries have been reported related to the incident.
