Norwich K-9 Ozzy helps track down suspect in hit-and-run crash

Norwich — A K-9 assigned to the Norwich Police Department helped track down the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that occurred Saturday morning.

Police subsequently arrested 29-year-old Jared Minski of Jewett City and charged him with following too closely, evading responsibility, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, misuse of marker plates and possession of narcotics.

Police dispatchers received numerous 911 calls about 7:40 a.m. regarding a hit-and-run crash in the area of The William W. Backus Hospital. No injuries were reported at the scene of the crash.

Minski allegedly fled the scene by car, which was located unoccupied a short time later by a Norwich police officer in the area of Fanning Avenue. Another Norwich police officer and his  K-9 partner, Ozzy, began tracking Minski and eventually located him in Yantic Cemetery on Lafayette Street, where he was waiting for a ride out of the area, police said. Minksi admitted he was the driver of the offending vehicle, police said.

He was being held on a $7,500 cash-surety bond.
