    Stonington police: Man injected heroin with son in the car

    Stonington -- Police arrested a Rhode Island man Sunday afternoon after they found him injecting heroin in a car that containing his 5-year-old son.

    Joseph C. Dimella, 39, of West Kingston, was charged with risk of injury to a minor, possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. He was held on a $5,000 bond and was arraigned in New London Superior Court on Monday. He was also wanted by New London police on a warrant for possession of narcotics.

    Police said Dimella was observed injecting narcotics using a hypodermic needle in a parking lot near the Stonington High School baseball field about 2:37 p.m. Police confirmed that he was injecting heroin.

    Police said the boy was sitting in the passenger seat and hypodermic needles were found throughout the car. In addition, police said Dimella was drinking alcoholic beverages and the car was running. Police said Dimella did pass a field sobriety test.

    Police contacted the state Department of Children and Families which took custody of the boy and is also investigating the incident.
