New London police investigating Bank Street shooting

New London — Police are investigating a possible drive-by shooting in which at least one bullet ended up in the closet of a Bank Street condominium early Sunday.

Police said a caller reported hearing gunshots near 357 Bank St. around 3 a.m. Officers canvassed the area and seized shell casings at the scene. They also seized a vehicle from another part of the city in connection with the shooting.

No one reported injuries in the shooting, which police said likely was not "a random act." Police didn't say if any property was damaged.

Agnish Mukhopadhyay, president of the homeowners association at Shaw's Landing Condominiums, said he, his wife and his 4-year-old son were home and asleep when the shooting happened.

Neither of them heard the gunshots, though one resident told them she heard four or five.

Instead, Mukhopadhyay's family woke up when police knocked on the door of their first-floor condo at 400 Bank St.

"They were like, 'Do you mind if we search your place? We think a bullet came toward your building,'" he said.

He consented and, sure enough, police found a bullet — and the hole it made — in Mukhopadhyay's closet.

Mukhopadhyay said he is "a little shocked" by the incident but otherwise reserving judgment until he learns more about what happened. He said police believe someone in a car was shooting at someone on the sidewalk, and Shaw's Landing unfortunately was the backdrop.

Mukhopadhyay, who has lived at Shaw's Landing for 10 years, said his main concern is a traffic camera on a nearby light pole. Residents learned it wasn't working after someone robbed the now-defunct Bream Cove Tavern about a year ago, he said.

He said the camera, which still isn't working, might have given police a good view of the shooting.

"Our big concern is: if it's not working, why is it there?" said Mukhopadhyay. "It provides a false sense of security."

Mukhopadhyay said the association might buy its own camera if the city doesn't resolve the issue. He has reached out to the mayor with his concerns.
