Police: Man who stole from Montville VFW caught red-handed in the woods
Montville — Police said they found a man who burglarized a VFW on Wednesday lying in the woods nearby with two money bags in his possession.
Police said they went to the VFW at 97 Raymond Hill Road about 4 a.m. because its alarm system sent an alert. On scene, officers found a broken window and heard movement in the woods.
Police said they searched the woods and found Jewett City resident Michael Meriwether, 41, lying on the ground with the money bags taken from the VFW.
Police charged Meriwether with third-degree burglary, fifth-degree larceny and criminal mischief. Held on a $25,000 bond, Meriwether is next due in Norwich Superior Court on June 20.
