UPDATED: Police: Man recovering from injuries after being rescued at Old Lyme beach

Old Lyme — A man who was airlifted from Soundview Beach on Monday is alive and recovering from his injuries, contrary to initial reports from state police that the individual died from the injuries.

Police said a caller reported a drowning victim at the beach at 5:56 p.m. Officers with the Old Lyme Police Department, which is overseen by a resident state trooper, found the man "conscious and alert" but called for a Life Star helicopter, which took him to Hartford Hospital.

The victim, who later was identified as John Theriault, 34, of East Haven, is alive and recovering from his injuries, police said Tuesday afternoon.
