Former Norwich man pleads guilty to federal firearm charge

A 29-year old man who was carrying a loaded handgun, 60 grams of heroin and a small amount of marijuana when Norwich Police attempted to detain him on fugitive charges in April 2018 pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Lewis Corwise, formerly of Norwich and New York City, faces a minimum of five years in prison when U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley sentences him on Oct. 24.

According to court documents and the office of U.S. Attorney John H. Durham, Corwise, who has a previous conviction for robbery in New York, was wanted by New York City police and attempted to flee when Norwich police arrived at 282 Central Ave. to arrest him on April 5, 2018.

At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a loaded Springfield xD-45 handgun, a zip-close bag containing nearly 60 grams of heroin, a small quantity of marijuana, a digital scale, five cellphones and other items.

Corwise has been detained since his arrest.

The investigation was conducted by the Norwich Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collin.
