UPDATED: One person dead in fiery tractor-trailer crash on I-395 in Norwich

Norwich — A tractor-trailer driver died in a fiery crash on Interstate 395 on Monday afternoon when the truck struck an overpass in Norwich.

The crash occurred at 12:19 p.m., when the tractor-trailer unit hauling an “over height” trailer hit an overpass north of Exit 11. The tractor-trailer turned over on its side and a portion of the trailer caught fire, police said.

The driver, 61-year-old Robert P. Neubig of Wallingford, was killed. The passenger, 41-year-old Joseph Spezzano, was not injured.

The tractor-trailer landed in a position that blocked the roadway. All traffic was diverted off the highway, causing congestion and traffic backups in parts of Norwich that included West Main Street, West Town Street and New London Turnpike.

The highway reopened about 8:25 p.m.
