East Lyme police investigating who cut down cedar tree

East Lyme — East Lyme police and the Parks and Recreation Department are trying to determine who cut down a cedar tree in town sometime Friday night or Saturday morning.

In a post on Facebook Monday morning, the Parks and Recreation department said that someone cut down the large tree, located behind Hole in the Wall Beach.

Police Chief Mike Finkelstein said police want to find out why the tree was cut down and left there over the weekend. The culprit, he said, could be charged with criminal mischief for causing damage to town property.

Finkelstein, who noted the incident was uncommon, said police would reach out to an arborist to ascertain the cost of a replacement.

Officials asked anyone with information to contact Officer Lawrence Watson at the East Lyme Police Department at (860) 739-5900.
