UPDATED: Man charged in connection with attempted robbery at Charter Oak in Waterford

Waterford — Town police said they have charged a man in connection with an attempted robbery Tuesday at the Charter Oak Federal Credit Union on Route 1.

Police received a call about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday of an attempted robbery and responded to the bank at 3 Boston Post Road, where the suspect already had left, Lt. Marc Balestracci said.

Police said the suspect had passed a note demanding money to the teller. When the teller went to speak to her manager, the suspect left.

No money was exchanged and no weapons were shown, Balestracci said.

In addition to the heavy response from Waterford police, the New London Police Department also responded and assisted, he said.

Waterford police Patrol and Investigative Services divisions worked in cooperation with New London police to identify and locate the suspect in New London at 2:30 p.m., according to the police report.

James McKinnon, of 83 Mansfield Road, New London, who was born in 1961, was taken into custody without issue and charged with second-degree criminal attempt to commit robbery, the report said.

McKinnon, who is being held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond, is scheduled to appear Wednesday at New London Superior Court.
