State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bailey Jongbloed has moved a step closer to confirmation as a federal judge.

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved by voice vote her nomination to serve as a judge for the U.S. District Court of Connecticut. Her nomination now must receive a vote by the full Senate.

Jongbloed, 60, of Madison, who has been presiding over criminal trials in New London for the past decade, was one of 15 attorneys nominated by President Donald J. Trump in August to various federal court judgeships around the nation. She had a confirmation hearing in October.

She is a registered Democrat, according to public records, and has the support of Connecticut's Democratic U.S. Senators, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy.

"Judge Jongbloed is highly respected as a fair jurist who recognizes the real, human impact of the court's decisions," Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a news release Thursday. "In her three decades of work as a federal prosecutor and state court judge, she has acquired not only a wealth of experience, but the deep respect of her peers. I am pleased that my colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee recognized Judge Jongbloed's outstanding qualifications in approving her nomination today, and I look forward to her swift confirmation by the Senate."

Jongbloed has served as a Connecticut Superior Court Judge since 2000, where she has presided over approximately 180 completed criminal and civil trials. Prior to her current position, she served as a federal criminal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut for 13 years, where she prosecuted a variety of federal criminal offenses including significant white-collar fraud cases. After graduating from New York University School of Law, Jongbloed clerked for Judge T. F. Gilroy Daly, chief judge for the District of Connecticut.
