    Fire in Mystic quickly extinguished

Mystic — Firefighters quickly extinguished a Tuesday afternoon blaze at a home located at 37 Noank-Ledyard Road.

The fire caused extensive damage to the dwelling, according to Mystic Fire Chief Frank Hilbert. Nobody was in the residence at the time and no injuries were reported.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene around 11:52 a.m. Firefighters extinguished the fire within 30 minutes of receiving the 911 call. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Although firefighters heard reports of pets in the house, none were located, and as of 1:30 p.m., none were reported as injured.

"The fire was centered in the kitchen," Hilbert said. "There's a door leading directly to it, so firefighters were able to rush in and put the fire out quickly."

In addition to the Mystic fire department, Ledyard, Old Mystic, both Mystic fire companies, the Navy submarine base and Poquonnock fire departments also responded.  Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics and Mystic River Ambulance were also at the scene. Noank Fire covered Mystic calls during the incident.

Almost all the windows in the ranch-style house were broken by firefighters during their efforts to get the fire under control. Hilbert said authorities found evidence of renovation efforts around the home, including an air compressor.

Jake Lindy of nearby Daniel Brown Drive, who witnessed the beginnings of the fire, was driving to work when he saw white smoke billowing from the building. He decided to stop and look around the back of the house and saw smoke coming from the siding.

After checking to see if there was anyone in the home, he called his father, who is a firefighter in Groton, who then made an emergency call reporting the fire.

Part of Noank-Ledyard Road was closed for about an hour during the emergency response to the fire. The road reopened around 12:45 p.m.
