Griswold hotel making property more accessible to those with physical disabilities

Owners of a Griswold hotel have begun making the property more accessible to people with physical disabilities under a settlement agreement reached with John Durham, the U.S. attorney for Connecticut, Durham's office announced Thursday.

AmericInn by Wyndam Hotel, owned and managed by Champion Griswold LLC, is making significant improvements to designated guest rooms, public restrooms and eating and recreation areas and is adding signage for parking spaces, a spokesman for the office said in a statement.

The hotel will continue to make improvements over the next three years.

The settlement agreement resolves a complaint filed by an individual with disabilities who alleged the hotel was not operating in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

The federal law prohibits private entities that own or operate “places of public accommodation,” including hotels, from discriminating on the basis of disability.

The ADA authorizes the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate complaints and undertake periodic reviews of compliance. The department also is authorized to commence a civil lawsuit in federal court in any case that involves a pattern or practice of discrimination or that raises issues of general public importance, and to seek injunctive relief, monetary damages and civil penalties.

Durham noted that the Griswold hotel’s management "worked quickly and cooperatively" with his office to address the ADA issues without litigation.
