New London — A man tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his car last Wednesday evening, according to police.

The girl was outside near the intersection of Broad Street and Connecticut Avenue about 5:45 p.m. when a man pulled up in a dark colored car and told her to "get in," according to the police. The girl ran away and was not injured, police said.

The man was wearing a hood that covered his face and was driving a dark colored sedan, police said. No further details were immediately available.

The police department posted about the incident on their Facebook page with the message: "We must teach our kids what to be aware of so they stay safe."

"Frequent and open discussions about safety greatly reduce a child's risk of being a victim," the post said. The police department advised parents to contact police if they need assistance with such discussions.
