2 vehicles stolen from New London prosecutor, linked to attempted break-ins in East Lyme

Two vehicles that were stolen from the home of New London prosecutor Theresa Ferryman in New London early Wednesday later were linked to attempted vehicle break-ins in East Lyme, according to police.

The vehicles, an Audi and a Mini Cooper that belong to Ferryman and her husband, Kirk Nassetta, were stolen from the couple’s home in New London sometime before 2:30 a.m., according to the prosecutor. The location of their home was not released by police.

About 2:30 a.m., the East Lyme Police Department responded to reports of attempted vehicle break-ins on Winthrop Road. When police arrived, two vehicles fled from the area, according to Chief Michael Finkelstein.

Police were able to pull over one of the vehicles at 2:42 a.m., but the vehicle again took off. Officers tried to stop the vehicle again on North Bridebrook Road, but the driver fled, Finkelstein said.

The vehicles were registered to Ferryman's and Nassetta’s New London address, prompting the East Lyme Police Department to contact the New London Police Department.

New London officers responded to the couple’s home shortly after 3 a.m. and discovered that the vehicles had been stolen from the property, police said.

The vehicles had not been located as of Wednesday evening.

"We're hopeful they will be located and no one will get hurt," Ferryman said by phone Wednesday.

Finkelstein said that in East Lyme, it appeared the alleged car thieves attempted to get into vehicles parked in the Winthrop Road area, but nothing was stolen or broken. “I think what they were doing was checking if they were unlocked, they’re looking for vehicles that aren’t secured so they were probably checking the doors,” he said.

In the last two weeks, more than a dozen vehicles have been reported stolen in Waterford, Griswold, Groton and surrounding towns, and a string of vehicle break-ins have taken place across the region. Local police departments have been repeatedly urging residents to bring their car keys inside and lock their vehicles.
