Explosion, fire destroy home in Waterford

Waterford — A Waterford home was destroyed after an explosion and fire early Wednesday morning, fire officials say.

The raised ranch at 52 Gurley Road was engulfed in flames about 3:05 a.m., according to Oswegatchie Fire Company No. 4 Chief Chris Pafias.

Fire officials said the explosion likely happened on the home's deck, where they believe a gas grill and an outdoor propane fireplace were located. First responders reported intense flames toward the front of the home, Pafias said.

Five people were inside the home at the time of the explosion, all escaped safely. A few firefighters were treated for dehydration at the scene but no injuries were reported, Pafias said.

The home appeared to be "a total loss," Pafias said. The fire marshal's office was investigating the cause of the fire.
