Man charged with setting off smoke bombs inside Elm Tree Inn in Pawcatuck

Stonington — A Pawcatuck man turned himself in to police Tuesday after they say he set off several smoke bombs in two hallways of the Elm Tree Inn on July 29.

Juan C. Cruz Jr., 32, of 98 West Broad St., Unit 13, the address of the inn, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree breach of peace after police obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was released on a bond and is scheduled to appear Sept. 17 in New London Superior Court.

Police said that on July 29, they and Pawcatuck firefighters responded to the downtown Pawcatuck boarding house for a fire alarm activation at 1:19 a.m. Police determined that four smoke bombs had been set off in the common hallways on the second and third floors. Police said they viewed surveillance tape and determined Cruz was responsible for igniting the smoke bombs.

Pawcatuck fire Chief Kevin Burns said the building had to be evacuated when fire alarm sounded and that flames coming from the smoke bombs could have ignited the carpeting in the hallways that lead to the exits.
