Norwich police charge New London man with firearm theft, possession

Norwich — A New London man was arrested on weapons theft and other charges Tuesday after he allegedly attempted to flee and struggled with police responding to a report of several males attempting to break into vehicles on Winchester Street.

Marquis D. Singleton, 27, of 50 Mountain Ave., New London, was charged at 4 a.m. Tuesday with two counts of criminal possession of a pistol and one count each of carrying a pistol or revolver without a permit, interfering with police and theft of a firearm. He was held on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Jan. 7 in Norwich Superior Court.

Police said officers were dispatched to Winchester Street for a report of several males attempting to break into motor vehicles. Police said Singleton matched a description of a suspect, and when police attempted to contact him to investigate, he allegedly became uncooperative, attempted to flee and resisted officers.

“During that struggle, the accused reached for his waist, whereby a responding officer immediately saw a firearm protruding from his pant line,” a police news release stated about the arrest. “That officer then forcibly removed the firearm.”

Singleton was one of six young men convicted in connection with the October 2010 stabbing death of Matthew Chew in New London. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in that case and served eight years in prison.
