Norwich garage fire displaces two people
Norwich — A two-alarm fire on Stone Cliff Lane displaced two residents Friday night.
East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Company Chief Keith Milton said an attached garage and an outbuilding behind it were engulfed in flames when crews arrived at 4 Stone Cliff Lane about 10:30 p.m. Friday. He said crews were able to "put a good stop to it" in about 25 minutes, preventing the blaze from extending into the house.
Additional tankers were called in from Bozrah, Salem, Gardner Lake and Oakdale to supplement the area water system, according to the chief. Mutual aid was provided by the Norwich Fire Department and the volunteer companies in Yantic and Laurel Hill, as well as the Mohegan Tribal FAST Team.
The American Red Cross said in a release that volunteers Lynda Joly, Fred Bolen, Sue Bolen and Pam LaFaille responded to assist the two displaced adults with their immediate needs. They also provided a recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire, as well as comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a resident might need when suddenly displaced from their home.
Case workers will be available in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan, according to the American Red Cross.
