UPDATED: Pedestrian seriously injured in New London, driver charged

    Police charged the driver

New London — A 60-year-old woman sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while walking across Colman Street in a marked crosswalk on Thursday morning, police said.

According to police, she was hit shortly after 9 a.m. near the intersection with Bank Street, and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police said after investigating, they charged driver Zuniga Alvarado, 21, of 51 Laurel Drive, with failure to grant right of way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk, and driving a motor vehicle while using a hand-held mobile telephone to engage in a call or while using a mobile electronic device.

A section of Bank Street between Colman Street and Ocean Avenue was closed for part of the morning.

The police department said officers observed the accident occur while en route to an unrelated call for service, and they rendered aid until the New London Fire Department and Yale New Haven Health parademics responded.
