Old Lyme man dead, police in Old Saybrook investigate cause

Old Saybrook — An Old Lyme man died Friday under what Old Saybrook police are calling suspicious circumstances.

The investigation has led to the arrest of an Old Saybrook man on drug possession and other charges unrelated to the death.

At 6:42 p.m. Friday, Old Saybrook police said they responded to 11 Turnstone Road for a report of an unconscious, unresponsive person. After lifesaving efforts were exhausted, the man was pronounced dead by the Middlesex Hospital Paramedic. He later was identified as Michael Sanders, 53, of Old Lyme.

Police did not say how Sanders died. An autopsy is scheduled at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington.

Old Saybrook police, in a statement, said they deemed the matter suspicious and secured the crime scene, which included the exterior and interior of the Turnstone Road home.

After the initial investigation, John P. Lambe, 41, of 11 Turnstone Road was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor. Police obtained and executed a search and seizure warrant early Saturday at Lambe's home and seized numerous pieces of evidence, including cellphones, cocaine, other narcotics, a handgun, a vehicle and drug paraphernalia.

Lambe additionally was charged with possession of cocaine. He is being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond.

“The matter has been deemed an isolated incident,” Old Saybrook police Chief Michael A. Spera said in a statement.

“The public is not in danger," he said. "Our criminal investigation remains active and additional charges are possible.”
