State police make arrest in Preston crash

Preston — State police charged a Windham driver in connection with a motor vehicle crash in April on Route 2, east of Route 2A, that seriously injured him and his teenage passenger.

The 20-year-old driver, David Yantin, was transported by ambulance to Backus Hospital in Norwich and then to Hartford Hospital, and the passenger, a 15-year-old girl, was taken by Life Star helicopter to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, according to the police report.

Yantin turned himself in on Dec. 15 after police obtained a warrant charging him with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, failing to stop when signaled/disobeying direction of officer, reckless driving, improper use of registration, failure to have minimum insurance and driving  an unregistered motor vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in Nowich Superior Court on Dec. 30.

According to the report, Ledyard police tried to stop Yantin on April 24 after they clocked the Honda Accord he was driving at 107 mph in a 50-mile-per-hour zone on Route 2 just west of the Foxwoods Resort Casino. An officer initially activated his cruiser's lights and followed the car, which then began passing other vehicles at a high rate of speed, for a short distance. The officer then turned off his overhead lights and sirens as they approached Shewville Road. Police said Yantin then turned off his lights near Matthewson Mill Road. Police then lost sight of the car.

Police said they determined during their investigation that Yantin continued driving west on Route 2 into Preston where he crossed into the eastbound lane and lost control. The car crossed back into the westbound lane, went off the road, tipped onto its left side and struck two trees, splitting one of them in two. The girl said neither she or Yantin were wearing seatbelts.
