Pedestrian injured in Groton accident identified

Groton — The pedestrian struck and injured by a vehicle in Groton on Tuesday was running across Route 12 when oncoming traffic had a green light, police said.

Groton Town police on Wednesday identified the victim as 21-year-old Matthew Bell of 1 Crystal Lake in Groton.

Bell was crossing Route 12 in the area of Crystal Lake Road at 8:17 p.m. Tuesday, when he was hit by a northbound vehicle and thrown to the east side of Route 12. He was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.

Bell was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that police said appeared to be not life-threatening.

The operator of the involved vehicle, Margaret Duval, 64, of Gales Ferry, remained at the scene of the accident to assist officers with the investigation.

Police said Duval and a separate witness traveling directly behind Duval’s vehicle told police the traffic light at Route 12 and Crystal Lake Road was green at the time for traffic proceeding north.

There were no enforcement actions taken by police.
