Police reminding drivers of 'Move Over' law after Groton crash

Groton — State police are reminding people of Connecticut's Move Over Law after a driver on Interstate 95 hit the side of a car that a trooper pulled over Wednesday.

About 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, a trooper pulled over a vehicle that been driving 88 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-95 north in Groton, police said in a Facebook post. The trooper learned the driver had a suspended license and began issuing a misdemeanor summons.

Police said a Jeep Wrangler driving in the right lane crossed into the shoulder, narrowly missed the police cruiser and hit the driver's side of the vehicle that was pulled over. One of the drivers sustained minor injuries, and both vehicles were disabled.

Police said the driver of the Jeep Wrangler was found to have no insurance. The driver was issued a court summons for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, failure to maintain lane, and driving without insurance. Police did not include the person's name or address in the post.

The law states that if a driver in the right lane on a highway is approaching an emergency vehicle on the shoulder or breakdown lane, and there are at least two lanes in that direction, the driver must slow down below the speed limit and move away one lane.

This is applicable for any emergency services vehicle with activated flashing lights, fire vehicles, tow trucks, and state, municipal or utility maintenance vehicles.
