Preston man charged in Griswold armed robbery

Griswold — A Preston man has been arrested by state police in connection with the armed robbery of a PetroMax gas station on Valentine's Day.

Michael J. Riegel, 30, of 6B Miller Road, Preston, was charged Tuesday with first-degree robbery and second-degree larceny.

State police in a news release said Riegel was arrested at Norwich Superior Court after he was transported from Bridgeport Correctional Center, where he is being held on "unrelated additional charges." According to the state Department of Correction website, he's been there since Feb. 24.

An investigation by the Eastern District Major Crime Squad, the Statewide Narcotics Task Force and the Bureau of Special Investigations led to Riegel's arrest this week, according to state police.

State police allege Riegel is the one who entered the gas station at 136 Preston Road in Griswold on Feb. 14 at 4:52 a.m. while wearing a black mask, displaying a black handgun and demanding money from a clerk. They said he left, with an unspecified amount of cash, in a gold-colored sedan that didn't have a license plate.

He previously was arrested by state police on Feb. 23 on multiple felony gun charges and misdemeanor drug offenses, according to the state Judicial Branch website.

He was held on a $150,000 bond for the most recent arrest pending his court appearance Tuesday.
