Man charged in Connecticut College voyeurism arrested in East Lyme

East Lyme police on Wednesday arrested a Massachusetts man and charged him with 13 counts of voyeurism, which police said was the culmination of a lengthy investigation based on evidence discovered during an investigation from the New London Police Department.

East Lyme police also charged Nicholas Spellman, 21, of Wilbraham, with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, eavesdropping and disorderly conduct.

New London police previously arrested Spellman in September 2020 in connection with an alleged case of voyeurism in a dormitory bathroom at Connecticut College, where Spellman was a student.

East Lyme police said in a news release that after the New London arrest, the Connecticut State Police Forensic Laboratory examined Spellman's laptop, and digital items were discovered indicating criminal activity in East Lyme.

The investigation determined that Spellman placed a video recording device in the bathroom of a private beach association where he worked, police said. After interviews of victims and witnesses in multiple states, police identified 13 victims who were unknowingly photographed.

Spellman is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
