Part of Poquonnock Road in Groton closed due to water main break

Groton — Part of Poquonnock Road temporarily is closed due to a water main break, town police confirmed.

The water main break, which happened at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, was in the area in front of the Big Y, town police said.Affected customers are all businesses  and include Pizza Palace, Chelsea Groton Bank and entire plaza behind them.

The police department alerted residents to the water main break on its Facebook page and urged drivers to seek other routes of travel. "The water main break is causing significant flooding on the roadway," police wrote. "Poquonnock Road is completely shut down at Long Hill Road west of the break and at Laurelwood Road east of the break."

Groton Utilities Manager of Communications and Community Outreach Dan Bouges, early Wednesday, said crews worked all night on the water main break and hope to have it repaired within a few hours.
