    Fire damages Pawcatuck home

Stonington -- A fire sparked by a discarded cigarette damaged the siding of a home at 19 Manor St. in Pawcatuck Sunday night.

Pawcatuck Fire Chief Kevin Burns said the 10:16 p.m. fire began when a cigarette was thrown outside the house where it ignited leaves and mulch. He said the windy conditions caused the fire to ignite the home's vinyl siding and flames spread up the side of the house.

Burns said the homeowner used a garden hose to extinguish some of the fire and when firefighters arrived they were able to stop the fire as it reached the attic.

Burns said there was no internal structural damage to the home but it did sustain smoke damage. He said three people were in the home, but delayed getting out because the fire was outside. One woman was taken to Westerly Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The home is owned by Rogerio and Maria Goulart, according to town assessment records.
