Two people rescued after boat capsizes in Niantic Bay

East Lyme — First responders rescued two people whose boat capsized Tuesday afternoon in the waters of Niantic Bay off Black Point.

Town police Chief Michael Finkelstein said the 21-foot boat was taking on water and eventually capsized. The two people were able to get on top of the capsized vessel, but had a difficult time determining exactly where they were.

Finkelstein said dispatchers decided to FaceTime with the people so they could see their surroundings. The East Lyme police boat, with a Niantic firefighter assisting, then was able to rescue the two and take them back to Mago Point in Waterford. Waterford Ambulance Service checked out the people, including one examined for exposure issues due to the cold water, but there were no injuries and they did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The incident happened about 4:37 p.m., Finkelstein said.

The agencies that responded included East Lyme police, Niantic Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department with its boat, and Waterford and East Lyme Ambulance services. The Coast Guard, which initially was responding to another call, also responded, he said.

“Everyone did a great job working together to determine where they were, get them safe, and it all worked out,” Finkelstein said.
